Why I decided to be the first millionaire case study

In this episode of Fan Question Friday, I answer someone’s question on why I decided to be the world’s first millionaire case study–where I’m documenting my journey from $0 to millionaire in real-time as it’s happening.

Preview: Worst case scenario, I flop and things go horribly, and then maybe if somebody ever gets a hold of it they can learn lessons of what made me flop but then I was like, well what if I freakin do it? How freakin fucking cool would that be if you could then go back and watch it step by step how it’s happening

Ladies and gents Hello and welcome, Happy Friday morning. Hope you’re doing super well on this beautiful Friday. This is only the second edition of fan question Friday and I’m super excited about it,so this show is called Curious with Calvin Wayman.

Then we will use that. We might come up with other hashtags but that’s the one that we have right now that we’ll use and we’ll find the questions and your question might get featured in the show. And so I’m really excited about the questions that we have today that we’ll go into. But before I get into that I also want to say that something that is so fun for this is this whole podcast project is just doing things to make it fun. So if you haven’t caught it yet I’m giving something away every single episode. We’ve already done several giveaways for podcasts that we’ve already done like headsets and stuff like that.

Just a cool way to keep people engaged and win cool prizes. And on that note of giving stuff away there’s something big coming. I have not announced on the podcast yet, I’m going to save it at the end of this episode because I am giving something away that I promise you no other podcasters has done. It’s going to be freaking huge it’s fricken awesome.I’m super excited about it but, I’ll talk about that at the very end of this episode. So let’s get into the questions. So the questions today were all brought to you by my man Lloyd Dodgin. So shout out to Lloyd, Lloyd is somebody that I’ve known for a little while now he’s an up and comer. He’s somebody that is jumping into this game of entrepreneurship. I know him personally because we ran a Spartan Race together and he’s also in another online community I’m a part of an online program that I have. But, when I asked people to come up with fan questions for this episode he gave a list. So I’m going to go down the whole list because,I think they’re questions that are huge. There are questions that I get often either on other people’s podcasts or when I see people in general. So we’re just going to jump in with those questions.

All of these questions are related to what I guess I would call my millionaire case study journey,So I’ll jump in. The first question he said is,what was your motivation intention or vision to start documenting your journey? That’s an awesome question. And again all of these are related probably to my millionaire case study journey. So let’s give some context around that,So when I quit my day job to jump into this entrepreneurial game I decided to create this thing called Millionaire case study.

It started out as a YouTube show and what it is , is it’s me documenting my journey going from zero or less than zero because, I was 53 grand in debt at the lowest point to me making my first million as it’s happening and I’ve continued to document that on my youtube show millionaire case study and I’m also showcasing it in things like this podcast on Facebook on Instagram and I talk about it when I speak on stage. Now,I just talk about my journey in a very open way. So what was the motivation intention or vision around that?

Well,it started when I was barely getting going into Game of entrepreneurship or of aiming higher and going after something bigger. And when I was starting the first thing I did is I looked around for other people that were wildly successful people that you might know like Oprah or Tony Robbins or Jim Carey or Gary Vaynerchuk and entrepreneurship or Louis Halls. And when I was looking at these people if I first saw what they were doing now to be successful but, then I was like ok that’s cool but,I can’t do exactly what they’re doing right. Like I don’t have a videographer a the rock, If you’re Gary Vaynerchuk or if you Nogueira be like I don’t have somebody that can follow me around like I don’t have that kind of money or I don’t have that the money for branding that some of these people have. What were they doing when they were me? And I started tracing back and trying to find the earliest versions of what they had documented and honestly I didn’t find much. And then I found stories of successful people talking about their struggle early on or what they did before they quote unquote made it. There’s a story of Jim Carrey for example that he talks about on Oprah before he made it. It’s a really cool story. He talks about how before he was this well-known comedian or or actor celebrity he would go at the top of this road and visualize himself being wildly successful. He would visualize directors being interested in him.

People wanting to like people like seeking him out and he even wrote himself a check for like ten million dollars and dated it at some point in the future.

And the really cool inspiring thing about the Jim Carrey story is he ultimately achieved his level of success, and so he was “this regular dude” and then achieved this high level of success. When I heard these stories and so many stories like them stories of Steve Jobs and all this I would then try to find the origin before they were big. Because here’s the thing I noticed all of these stories of people even in the struggle they were always stories told after the fact of them being successful. All the lessons about how they actually achieved their level of success how they became the celebrity or the millionaire or whoever they are whatever they’re successful at they were always told after the fact and then kind of ate at me.

I was like Man how cool would it be if I could go rewind the tape before Jim Carrey made his million and watch what he did when he was in the early process. What if I could rewind it on Oprah and see what she did before she was ” Oprah “or “Ellen DeGeneres” or “Gary Vaynerchuk”. What if I could go rewind it and watch it as they were as it was actually happening before they made it. Well,as it turns out it didn’t exist. It didn’t exist and I had a reason I wanted to fight is I had these aspirations to be a millionaire. I had these aspirations to be a successful entrepreneur. And so I wanted to see what they did in the very beginning to take steps to get going on their journey. And again lo and behold I just didn’t find it. And so one day I just decided if it doesn’t exist, and I literally I’m going to go after it.

Why don’t I hit record and go after it and I just decided holy cow I think I’m going to do this if there isn’t a if there is not a single person on this planet yet that documented their journey from the very beginning to the point of being successful. And it makes sense that it didn’t exist. Like how do people know that they’re going to be successful or at least the level they are like. And once they finally hit it they always wish they would have documented the whole thing but they didn’t. I hear Gary V. talk about this all the time. He’s Gary Vaynerchuk he’s always like Man I wish I was I was recording like early in my baseball trading days or in the early days of wine library and he’s doing it now documenting his journey but it’s after he’s had some pretty decent levels of success, So people don’t think of it until after the story. So it makes sense it’s almost like you have to be a fortune teller.

So I it makes sense that doesn’t exist that didn’t exist. But I just came to the point where I was like well if I believe that I can actually do this if I believe I can be a successful entrepreneur, even though I’m just a regular dude that’s listening to other people’s podcasts or listening to books if I’m really going to go after it why not documented like worst case scenario.I flop and things go horribly, and then maybe if somebody ever gets a hold of it they can learn lessons of what made me flop but then I was like well what if I freakin do it. What if I become a successful entrepreneur? or what if I actually do become a millionaire? How freakin fucking cool would that be if you could then go back and watch it step by step how it’s happening and just selfishly, I thought I would freaking love to have that. Like I wish that existed when I was getting started and if I can be that for somebody else to make a difference on this world to make an impact to actually go after something that they really want to go after. Just because they watched me go from nothing to something and it impacted them enough to for them to believe it to actually believe in this stuff. That vision is important,or action is important whatever it is that made me actually achieve it. That would feel like a really really cool legacy. And so that’s what was the motivation behind starting it starting to document my journey to just keep it super real to show other people.

And you know like I’ll be honest at the beginning though too. It was a mind f like. There were times where I was like well who am I to start documenting this now? I’m not even a millionaire yet and I was like maybe I’ll wait for till I reach a certain level of success first and then I was like No ’cause that’s just the point.

Like even if I didn’t even if I waited until I made six figures for the first time and what and what.

Now I have permission to buy some but like some some arbitrary number that’s the point that I can have permission to start talking. In fact if I started if I hit six figures for the first time and that was enough to say hey you can start documenting, it would have been way cooler if I was documenting from the very beginning of how I even hit six figures so that you can like on the lowest level regular people can can see happen you know.

And so luckily I just like I just want to give myself bones to my younger self for having the freak’n balls to do it. But, I was like you know what. That’s just the point. I’m not successful yet. So I’m gonna start documenting now. So when I am people can follow and I am just so glad that I had the blind faith that I pushed record for moon case study and started doing it. And so that’s was my motivation. I started recording her case study before I ever had a single client in business,I documented the point where I made my first dollar my first ever dollar,Online. It was insane like it was like seven bucks that’s seven dollars felt like a million bucks, It was freaking awesome! Got my first clients. And have been doing it ever since, and if those of you that follow Moon are case setting everything am I a millionaire? No, like I’m not a millionaire yet. Which is just the point. I’m still in the journey. Like even me having this podcast is kind of part of that journey and just for transparency sake last year,I think we did somewhere between 140 or 150 thousand in revenue. So I’m only about 10 percent ish from where I want to be but I want to capture it because I literally started it when I was nothing.

And it’s cool that I can now go back and see how I got to where I got because I know that there’s people either listening to this or people I talk to along their journey that they want to get to the point where they can see. How do you go from zero to six figures and then beyond. And now it’s there. So I hope that helps with the question of what was the motivation behind documenting the journey why do I still go after it now something else that Lloyd asked is, Has my vision changed over time? That’s a great question because in a way it has. It has shifted in some sense especially recently because again this whole journey I call it millionnaire case study, my youtube show. You can check out at millionnaire casestudy.com and this is how it is changed or shifted in some way instead of it just being the goal to make a million dollars, I’ve had to shift it almost out of necessity. Because,I want to feel better about what I’m doing not that I’ve done anything shady necessarily but when you’re in this entrepreneurial game you need to have things that give you energy and fuel and things that make you feel good. And what makes me feel good is giving value to people because, I feel like I either have the leverage or I have like I just feel much more confident when I when I’ve given more to a situation, like when I’ve given value to something instead of just taking, taken. So how my vision has shifted,is instead of just thinking about how I’m getting a million dollars. It’s how am I putting out a million dollars in value. So it’s almost like the million dollars is not the bullseye target anymore. Instead it’s like shifted to the side and I’m now focused on doing the thing 100 percent in my control that I know that if I do that thing, then the money comes as a byproduct. So that’s the shift the the million dollars now is the byproduct of the journey that I’m on instead of just the destination. So more of the focus is what can I do to give value to people how can I help more people get out of debt? Like I’ve been able to get out of debt? How can I help more people change their story around fear? or how can I help people actually believe that they have something to give to this world? And like get them out there and like actually starting their journey of making a difference in the world what can I do to actually show people that whatever they have as a dream that it’s possible. So thinking about value in that sense and then just believing that if I’m giving value and taking action on putting value out into the world that the money just comes as a byproduct. So that’s a subtle shift, and I think this super important next question.

What benefits have you seen since making the decision to document? Many, some now some of the biggest. I like that he said benefits instead of side effects because some of the side effects we’re like in the beginning I was like very nervous because I got people that were close in my circle that were kind of like making fun of it and that kind of deterred me for a little bit. But, the benefits have greatly outweighed it.

The one benefit that I think it’s done is it , is it has accelerated my journey and my process because I’m holding myself accountable, like I’m making goals and like going after it. Like even though I’m not where I want to be yet necessarily I feel like I’m way farther down the line because I’m documenting it I’m putting my ass on the line and that’s just been super good. But,the other thing it’s done is it’s connected me with some really cool people on a really cool level, so many people watch it and they’re like wow this is so freakin refreshing because I document that the realness of the journey. And so it’s not just saying like this is how freak’n awesome I am. It’s like no this is this shit that I’m going through. Like I try to share some of my lows not just the highs but when I’m feeling anxious or depressed or when I hit into a brick wall when I lose a client all that type of stuff. And so because it’s so real people relate to it,everybody else on social media and stuff they’re always putting their best foot forward and that’s awesome I get it. But there’s something to be said I think for real most people really crave the real news because there’s so much B.S. out there and being able to connect with people and have deepened conversations because of what I share has been, super awesome. So those have been really awesome benefits.

Next question, Have you felt that documenting the journey has pushed you farther along your path as an entrepreneur? Yes, so I just barely answered that absolutely. It’s pushed me farther along because,it’s putting myself out there. It’s saying that this is who I really am. It’s holding myself accountable and there’s just research out there that shows that when you put yourself out there when you are being held accountable you’re like three times more likely to achieve it. Like it’s it’s some weird thing with our. Like when we know somebody is watching. We’re going to do the thing that we committed to do. So it has definitely no doubt. Pushed me further along my path as an entrepreneur.

Next question,How does someone document their journey as an entrepreneur from zero to empire while still remaining genuine and not looking like a copycat? That is such an awesome question, and my response to this is I think documenting just doing the documentation fixes this issue. Because,so many people are copycatting on social media. And to me they’re copycatting in a way of like I am so great at this high level as somebody else. When you’re committing to actually documenting the process of what you’re going through. Then you’re kind of forced to just show like The the ups and the downs and your real self. Like it’s hard to do the copycat thing it’s hard to just give the highlight reel or the picture of you in front of a Lamborghini,or the picture of you with like cash on your bed. Like when you’re committing to documenting what you’re actually going through it shows that this is who I am and this is who this is what I’m really going through. So that’s my responses to that is actually just committing to the real documentation of the process, makes you stand out from everyone else because you’re not being a copycat. You’re being your real self showing your actual process they’re going through.

All right,Next question. What is the best advice you could give to somebody wanting to document their journey? So simple bro, The answer to that is to start,to start and be ok looking sloppy. I am so big on this. It’s probably the opposite advice that you would expect to hear, you’d probably hear the like make it look awesome no no no. First of all we need to realize how freakin lucky we are in 2018 or whatever  You’re listening to this. Like the tools that we have to document and to create our story did not exist in 1980 or 2000 or 1990 or maybe even 2000, look freak’n YouTube didn’t even come out to like 2005 like we have the ability to do it based on the tool that’s in our freak’n pocket or what you’re probably using to listen to this podcast right now, It didn’t exist. It would take millions of dollars of infrastructure to be able to do it. So it actually is not surprising when you think about it why it didn’t exist? Why there is nothing like this to be able to document? why there are why there aren’t those stories. Because there wasn’t the infrastructure in humanity to be allow a regular person starting from zero to start documenting.

But, now any single person listening to this right now can pull out their phone and document in several ways you can document either with a video from your phone, you can document with photos and stories behind the photos, you can document by writing it and creating a blog or writing on medium. So I would say free can just start and put it out there. Start like you could document it and just hold on to it but,I would say put it out like put it in some public way and don’t worry about it being so freak’n perfect. Perfection hold way too many of us back. And the thing I would say there is,it’s all about progress not perfection. If you want it to be perfect it just sits on the shelf. And this is a concept I talk about my book fish out of water quite a bit and that has become a member of the CIA. Every successful person I’ve talked to or been able to hang out with or even the success that I’ve had on my journey so far,it’s becoming a member of the CIA and I don’t mean the Central Intelligence Agency becoming a secret agent. I mean CIA standing for Consistent Imperfect Action. Do something that you can do to be consistent and don’t worry about it being perfect Perfection just free as you be imperfect and they just do it just act anyway. Consistent perfect actions startthat’s the very best advice I can give. If you want to document your journey get in the game, Just freakin start and then the last question for this episode.

Any tools you recommend for creating content or documenting? Your Instagram is on point. Well, thank you so much Lloyd so tools for documenting. I would say whatever it takes to keep it as simple as possible. Your cell phone is literally all you need. If you’re listening to this right now then you have enough tool you have enough tools to do your own documenting. Either you’re watching this on YouTube and you have a laptop that has like a webcam or you’re listening to this on your phone and your phone can take pictures and videos like this question it would be very much like the last one. Those are the tools that I would recommend, you can always improve on that with higher quality cameras or microphones or things like that but I would get in the game first. Use the tool that you have that you’re using right now. Listen those podcasts, and I would do that to get started.

So I’m going to wrap it up right there on this episode of fan question Friday, thanks to Lloyd dodgin for the questions. If you want your question answered your questions answered on next week’s episode. Then again you can ask the questions on my Facebook page or anything like that you can join the facebook group and ask your questions there by going to calvinwayman.com/podcastgroup ask your questions in there or if you ask them anywhere on social media Instagram or Facebook or Twitter. They just use the hashtag F-Q-F (#FQF) for fan question Friday and we should be able to find it there. Yeah and if you ask a question that we use I will totally shut you out. Just like we’re doing with Loyde here. So look forward to having your questions for the podcast and I also mentioned we are doing prize giveaways. Every single episode. How do you win? Just do that. It’ll go right to iTunes you can leave a review. You will get a raffle ticket you get your name pulled you’ll win a prize. And it’s just been a ton of fun.

So,this episode will have a prize we’ll give away on Facebook live in a couple days time and just to wrap up this episode I mentioned I have a massive announcement that I’m giving away that I haven’t even announced on my social media yet, by the time this goes live. I should have announced it but I’m gonna give away something massive again. I want this this podcast to be so freakin fun, I believe in it. On the one year anniversary of the show. And so here we are at the very beginning of the podcast and I’m going to announce it now because come hell or high water. Even if you did not win the prizes that we’ve already given away you still have a raffle ticket that is in the drawing to win a freaking car. So I wanna just again, make this frrak’n fun and awesome.

So if you want to I would love to have you along the the the ride and the journey of creating this podcast and making it something super fun. So, again I’m going to give away a car so you can win or enter your chance to win the car by leaving a review on this podcast that puts you in the drawing not only for a prize for this episode but every episode. People that leaves a review they can win the prize for that episode. And every review also gets a raffle ticket for the big massive prize for the one year anniversary that will be the car.
